This is the single most common question we get from a new client with a fixed monthly ad budget: "Should I put this into Google Ads or Meta Ads?" The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and the right choice depends far more on your business type and sales cycle than on which platform is "better." Here's how we actually think about it.
How Google Ads Works: Intent-Based Advertising
Google Ads shows your business to people who are actively typing a search — they already have a need and are looking for a solution right now. If someone searches "SEO agency in Shimla" or "AC repair near me," they have existing intent, and Google Ads puts you in front of them at exactly that moment.
This makes Google Ads especially strong for businesses with a clear, definable service someone would actively search for: repair services, agencies, clinics, real estate, legal services, and anything with an obvious "near me" search pattern.
How Meta Ads Works: Interest-Based Discovery
Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) works differently — it shows your business to people based on their interests, behaviour, and demographics, whether or not they were actively looking for you. Nobody searches "boutique clothing brand," but a well-targeted Meta ad can put your product directly in front of someone likely to want it, at a moment they weren't expecting to shop.
This makes Meta Ads especially strong for visually appealing products, impulse or discovery purchases, brand-building, and businesses that benefit from video or image storytelling — fashion, D2C products, home decor, food and beverage, and hospitality.
Which Should You Choose, By Business Type
- Local service businesses (repair, clinics, legal, home services): Start with Google Ads. People search for these by need, not discovery.
- E-commerce and D2C brands: Meta Ads usually wins early for discovery and brand awareness, with Google Ads (especially Shopping ads) added once you have enough proof of demand to target search intent too.
- B2B and SaaS: Google Ads for high-intent search terms, Meta and LinkedIn for building awareness with decision-makers before they're actively searching.
- Hospitality and tourism (hotels, homestays, travel): Both, but weighted differently by season — Meta Ads for inspiration and discovery in the planning phase, Google Ads for the "Shimla hotels near Mall Road" searches close to the booking decision.
Can You Run Both? Usually, Yes — Eventually
Most mature marketing budgets end up running both platforms, but not on day one with a limited budget. Splitting ₹15,000 a month across two platforms often means neither gets enough spend to exit the learning phase and perform well. Our general guidance: pick the platform that matches where your customer already is in their decision — search intent (Google) or discovery (Meta) — prove it works, and only then add the second platform once you have budget to run both properly.
What This Looks Like in Practice
Every performance marketing engagement we run starts with the same question this article does: what does your customer's journey actually look like before they buy? That answer decides the platform, the creative, and the budget split — not a generic template applied to every client regardless of industry.
Before you commit a budget, our digital marketing pricing guide breaks down typical management fees for both platforms. And if organic reach matters too, pair paid with our social media marketing playbook.
